We caught up with Josh Hansen, Senior Design Manager for Harris, to uncover the inspiration behind the new color options and for tips on creating a pontoon that showcases your family's personality and style.
How did you approach looking at color?
I started by looking at the entire spectrum of color and the emotions connected to each. Then I really looked at the Harris brand and said, OK, our brand is premium, luxury, technology. It's all about exclusivity, elegance, comfort. I eliminated the colors that didn't fit and looked within the narrower spectrum to identify where we already offer color and where the gaps are.
What was the inspiration behind the new Sage Green fence color?
Well, lots of trends analysis. It started with the current trend of working within the gray space. A lot of automotive brands are using these—well, you could call them grays, but you could also refer to them as colors that have been desaturated. They usually have a blue or green tint to them.
So that's where it started. Then we looked at our competitors to make sure we have a unique color, something people can only get from Harris, so we shifted toward green for that reason and also because greens are very on trend right now.
How did you develop the new Vivid Blue, Blush Red, and Sun Gold accent colors?
Harris accent colors have been quite conservative. We do have some reds and blues, but they’re very muted tones, and I wanted to bring more color in. Because the accent stripe is a smaller area on the boat, you can go more bold, so I chose colors that were really strong.
Something a lot of pontoon owners do is try to make a boat in their favorite sports team’s colors. Bright red, blue, and gold are three very common team colors. These accents paired with our base fence colors let them create a lot of different combinations to match their team.
You've added new vinyl colors as well. Why was that addition so important as you developed this palette?
As I'm approaching new boat design, I'm looking to make the boat a more holistic statement. So with the new additions, you can get the Vivid Blue, Blush Red, or Sun Gold as vinyl accent stripes to bring that color to the inside of the boat, where you spend most of your time.
How do you recommend a boater chooses their pontoon’s colors?
Since they spend the majority of their time on the inside of the boat, I would start by asking, “What do I want my furniture to look like?” and then choosing a base vinyl that they’re happy with. Then I would choose accent color second, fence color third, and flooring fourth.
What does Harris’s broad color palette do for Harris owners?
We have a pretty diverse collection of owners that range from young couples just starting their families to people in their 70s and 80s. Our color palette offers a range for a lot of different types of people. Even so, it’s still quite curated—you're not going to see any obnoxious or fad-driven colors in the choices you get from Harris.
